Thanks for stopping by at Smooth Jazz Vibes and checking out this issue of my contemporary jazz page dedicated to the newest in the field of contemporary or smooth jazz.
I am back in time with another issue of my jazz page with lots of reviews. I have been flooded with quality stuff in the past few weeks and must state that the smooth jazz scene is thriving and blossoming giving us lots of exciting music to enjoy. Some interesting newcomers to mention are Jimmy Reid and Steve Cole who both deliver some outstanding debut albums. Most notably Jimmy Reid is considered by myself as one of the most important and talented newcomers to arrive on the smooth jazz scene this year.

As usual I added some links to my favorite links page. Newly added are for instance the pages of Eric Marienthal and the page of Marilyn Scott. If you know of any smooth jazz site not yet listed here please drop me a line. Thanks!

I am sad to report on the death of several muscians from the smooth jazz and session scene.
| George Howard Dead at 41 |
| GRP recording artist, George Howard has died after contracting
lymphoma (colon cancer). He was 41 years old. Born in Philadelphia, George Howard initially established himself in the 1970s as a session saxophonist on the burgeoning Philly R&B scene and worked with such groups as Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, First Choice and Blue Magic. He later outed with Grover Washington Jr. before locating to Atlanta and commencing his solo career which began in 1982 with his debut album "Asphalt Gardens" for the Palo Alto Jazz label. Switching to the TBA label in 1984, George recorded "Stepping Out" with guests Kenii Burke, Ndugu, Gwen Guthrie and Dean Grant. A further relocation to Los Angeles resulted in further album releases "Dancing In The Sun" (his breaktrough recording in 1985) and "Love Will Follow" featuring Siedah Garrett and four members of Maze in 1986. A further switch to MCA Records continued his recording career and included the albums "A Nice Place To Be" and "Personal" in 1989 which included "Fakin' The Feeling" featuring Syreeta. In 1991, he switched to GRP Records where he recorded 7 albums, his most recent being "Midnight Mood". A "Best Of/Anthology" was released on GRP in 1997. George is survived by sisters Mary and Doris and daughter, Jade. |
| Carlos Vega has died |
| It´s very sad to have to report the death of drummer Carlos Vega
on Tuesday April 7th at his home in Los Angeles, an apparent suicide
(according to The Boston Herald, from a single self-inflicted
gunshot). Vega's highest-profile gig was as drummer for James
Taylor over the past decade. While never achieving the high-profile recognition of a Jeff Porcaro or Simon Phillips, Vega was regarded as one of the best L.A. session players and played on hundreds of albums. He was a member of keyboardist David Garfield´s band Karizma on all four of their CD´s and appeared on a number of other Garfield-related releases as well such as Riding Bean, the L.A. Keyboard Project, Tribute To Jeff and his latest, I Am The Cat...Man. Additionally Carlos Vega played on numerous projects for GRP records in the 80ies and was a household name in the fusion scene. |
| Michael Hedges dies in car crash |
| Innovative new age guitarist Michael Hedges (1953 - 1997) died in a car crash on Thanksgiving weekend in Booneville, CA. Born in Sacramento, CA and raised in Oklahoma, Heges was discovered by Windham Hill founder and guitarist William Ackerman in 1981 and subsequently signed to his newly founded label. He helped forge the early reputation of the label and recorded seven albums for the label, helping to define the New Age image of Windham Hill in the 80s. He is survived by his mother, three siblings and two sons. |
Below are my current favorite CDs that arrived during the past
few weeks. I picked my favorites from the crop and would like
to recommend those to my readers. Please note that you can check

| JIMMY REID - FOREVER LOVED (Discovery 77074), 50:02 Jimmy Reid is a hell of a newcomer and delivers with «Forever Loved» a truly outstanding debut album. Having paid his dues as a street musician he arrives now with his first recording boasting top guests like Paul Jackson Jr, Ricky Lawson, Paulinho Da Costa and Kirk Whalum with whom he duets on «Love Is». His tone on the sax is a cross between Gerald Albright, Kirk Whalum and Kenny G while retaining his own soulful identity. On the groovy opening track «Feels So Good» Jimmy Reid successfully emulates the style of Gerald Albright and delivers the first slice of his impressing skills on the horn. The sweet «So Beautiful» is straight from the Kenny G school and offers some heartfelt and beautiful playing on the soprano sax and a guitar solo by Ray Fuller. Real highlight on the album is the cover of the huge hit «My Heart Will Go On (Love Theme From Titanic)» which takes this tune to new hights of emotion and passion and lets you soar over the sea like you were at the top of the Titanic yourself (I guess you know the picture...). The tune is complete with penny whistle and exciting climax and lets the original version of Celine Dion pale in comparison. The rest of the album continues on a consistantly high level with a selection of mainly self-penned songs and top notch musicianship. This CD is a real standout album and one the very best albums that came along in long time. This amazing guy arrives at the scene and keeps up with the best right from the beginning. Jimmy Reid is the discovery ot the year! Listen to some sound samples or order the CD for $14.99 from Music Blvd. |
| BRIAN CULBERTSON - SECRETS (Mesa/Bluemoon 92775), 45:02 Brian Culbertson comes up with another slice of his polished and cool smooth piano playing that embraces you like an old friend. The quality on the album is consistently high and enjoyable and the production is top notch. The grooves are generally laid back and sensous perfectly for these chill out moments. Guests include Dwight Sills, Paul Jackson Jr and Jeff Golub on guitar and Steve Finckle and Gerald Albright on sax. The album offers the cover of David Sanborn's «Straight To The Heart» which is delivered with style and some cool ivory tinkling by Brian Culbertson. This a very cool quality smooth jazz album that I can recommend for anyone into polished and elegant music. Listen to some sound samples or order the CD for $12.99 from Music Blvd. |
| DANCING FANTASY - LOVE LETTERS (Innovative Communications 2289),
65:17 I have been a fan of this group for a long time and await each album eagerly. «Love Letters» did not disappoint me and marks another step in the development of this band. The music of Dancing Fantasy offers the familiar keyboard grooves and some cool playing by guests Yorck on sax and flute and Bill Joseph Flynn on guitars. Cover tune is Kool and the Gang's «Too Hot» which is offered in a laid back and smooth version. But the real gems are their own compositions which let you close your eyes and let you be carried away by these beautiful melodies, hypnotic grooves and jazzy solos by each member of the group. Music to make love by! Sorry - this particular title is not available from Music Blvd. |
| RICHARD ELLIOT - JUMPIN' OFF (Metro Blue 7243 8 38251), 44:21 Oh baby - this album is right down my alley! The team of Richard Elliot's soulful and sultry sax and Paul Brown's hip production style yields superior results. The grooves are cool and laidback and the playing has a lot of soul and passion. Guests include Paul Jackson Jr, Brian Culbertson, Tim Heintz and Peter White. Cover tunes are Luther Vandross' «Here And Now» (one of my favorites from Luther Vandross and another winner here) and the familiar «Nobody Knows». Smooth jazz doesn't get better than this! Order the CD for $11.99 from Music Blvd. |
| KIM WATERS - LOVE'S MELODY (Shanachie 5042), 58:02 This album by saxophonist Kim Waters offers the romantic saxophone playing we expect from this artist in abundance. On this CD Kim Waters teams up with guitarist Chuck Loeb on a few tracks to good effect. The disc is of high quality and offers a nice selection of tunes penned by Kim Waters and the covers of the classics «Sunny» and «Midnight At The Oasis». The grooves are contemporary and the playing is as good as ever. This is another quality album in the familiar vein from Kim Waters. Order the CD for $14.99 from Music Blvd. |
| PAUL TAYLOR - PLEASURE SEEKER (Countdown/Unity 17755), 49:43 Paul Taylor is a major talent on the saxophone and one of the preeminent players of the smooth jazz scene. The album's opener «Groove Zone» with its slow canned grooves and the sweet and intense saxophone of the leader embrace you right away. Next the title track offers more of this incredibly sweet and passionate horn while being backed by and urging and hip backdrop. There are no particular stand out tracks to mention because the overall quality of the album is consistently high and the tunes fall more or less into the same category of "contemporary grooves with a sweet sax wailing on top". I wish Paul Taylor the success he deserves. Listen to some sound samples or order the CD for $13.99 from Music Blvd. |
| EARL KLUGH - THE JOURNEY (Warner Brothers 120164), 51:34 Veteran acoustic guitar player Earl Klugh comes up with a new album after a countless string of recordings. I am glad to report that Earl hasn't lost his magic and «The Journey» is another worthwile addition to any collection although not adding anything new compared to his previous work. He is backed by familiar players like Greg Phillinganes, Paulinho Da Costa, Paul Jackson Jr and Harvey Mason. The grooves have been adapted to the current contemporary standard but his playing and compositions remain as sweet and unique as ever. The tunes run the gamut stylistically from funky to latin to reggae to easy sunny tunes bearing the Klugh stamp. Nothing earth shattering but nevertheless some more quality stuff in the familiar Earl Klugh vein. Listen to some sound samples or order the CD for $11.99 from Music Blvd. |

STEVE COLE - STAY AWHILE (Atlantic/Bluemoon 92797), 44:31 Steve Cole is another newcomer delivering some top class smooth jazz on the highest level. Produced by Brian Culbertson this album boasts cool contemporary grooves with some nice retro touches with the leader wailing on his sax. Guests include the usual array of the best session players (Paul Jackson Jr., Lenny Castro) apart from Brian Culbertson who adds to the project significantly with his keyboard playing and arranging. Most tunes are of the cool and laid-back variety with background vocals, washed synths and guitar touches. No particular tracks to mention because the overall quality is consistently high with no tunes letting you down. This album is a worthwile addition to any smooth jazz collection. Very recommended! Order the CD for $11.99 from Music Blvd. |
| BOB JAMES - PLAYING HOOKY (Warner Bros. 46737), 52:08 Veteran keyboard player Bob James does it again and comes up with a classy album full of brilliant compositions, first-rate musicianship and smooth contemporary grooves. Guest musicians include Chuck Loeb, Steve Gadd, Nathan East, Boney James and Rick Braun. Bob manages to adopt the current styles and grooves remarkably well while retaining his unique keyboard style at the same time - a fact which should please his old fans and any lover of current smooth jazz as well. Most notable are «Mind Games» produced by Paul Brown featuring Boney James which is a smooth jazz gem and «The River Returns» which is classic BJ at its best. Quality stuff not to be missed! Listen to some sound samples or order the CD for $14.99 from Music Blvd. |
