What We're Listening To ** January 2011

The immensely soulful Ready Or Not by Paul Hardcastle from his soon to be released CD Desire. Written back in the early nineties but never previously released this stunning number has co-writer Steven Dante on vocals and is very special indeed.

Vintage Vibe by the multi-talented Vincent Ingala from his debut recording North End Soul. The album derives its title from the North End of Waterbury, CT where many of Vincents family members grew up listening to the funk, R & B and soul of the day. With Vintage Vibe he embraces these old school sensibilities in a way that belies his (seventeen) years and in addition produces cool playing on sax that is reminiscent of Euge Groove at his very best.

Why Dont You by Nate Harasim from the CD Rush. With a supporting line-up of Cindy Bradley, Mel Brown, Jason Rahn and Darren Rahn this big, horn driven gem could easily be dubbed as being from the Trippin N Rhythm all-stars.

Cote DAzur which is the title tune from The Rippingtons excellent new release. Welcomed in on an almost European style dance beat this rhythmic and inviting cut quickly assumes a typically intense Rippingtons stride.

Gulf Breeze by soulful trumpet and flugelhorn player Michael C. Lewis from his CD Reflection. Evocative of sun soaked beaches and with a wonderful mid tempo swagger, this one is a real gem.

Alexander Boynton Jr. - Doo Bee Doo Bop (2010)
This album is a sensational slice of smooth jazz, where did this bass player hide until now? Every song is a winner, and guest players like Jeff Lorber, Paul Jackson Jr., Tony Maiden, Rick Braun, Phil Perry, Jeff Golub, Michael Thompson, Tony Moore and Lenny Castro indicate top-notch musicianship. One of the best releases of recent times!

Terje Lie - Urban Vacation (2010)
This CD by Terje Lie which was released last year is one of my favorites boasting great grooves, melodies and playing by all involved, most notably Jeff Lorber on keys. The inclusion of the Roy Ayers' classic "Red, Black & Green" is an additional bonus. A future classic!

Jonathan Fritzen - Diamonds (2010)
This album by keyboardist Jonathan Fritzen is a beauty, perfectly played and produced, it is an endless joy, with great guest appearances by Darren Rahn, Jessy J and others. Not to be overlooked!

Funk This! - Size Does Matter (2005)
This album is a great re-discovery. This band delivers and outstanding set of funky and smooth instrumentals & vocals of the highest quality. Check it out, you will be delighted!

Mark Hasselbach - Solar Winds (1982)
My nod to the past goes to (Gabriel) Mark Hasselbach - who these days records under his first name Gabriel - released this classic LP in 1982, especially "Afro Desia" remains a favorite of mine. Well worth a listen again!
