The 24th annual Boscov's Berks Jazz Festival was kicked off for me with the performance of Project 222, a band led by guitarist Dean Brown and bassist Schuyler Deale. They appeared at Gerald Veasley's Jazz Base in a club setting. The lineup was top-notch, it featured Rocky Bryant on drums, Emedin Rivera on percussion, Gery Etkins on keyboards and Paula Atherton on flute and sax. As an additional bonus, we got the three piece Berks Horns. Guitarist Dean Brown is well known for his energetic style, he really knows how to get "in the zone", improvise and take the music to the next level. The band was cooking and played material from the catalogs of all members, we got "Solid" from Dean Brown, "JB" from Paul Atherton among other groovy tracks. The concert was rather short lasting only a bit more than an hour (they had to play one more set at 10pm), but provided a great start to this year's festival.
