Berks Jazz Fest 2014: Chieli Minucci & Special EFX

At 10pm Chieli Minucci & Special EFX with special guests appeared, doing their 30th Anniversary Concert. It was the familiar lineup with Lionel Cordew on drums, Jerry Brooks on bass and Jay Rowe on keyboards. Chieli Minucci has a knack for melodies and is a great guitar player, he delved right into the music with the nice guitar led "My Girl Sunday", before the first guest Vincent Ingala on sax joined the stage. This young player is a rising star on the scene and blended perfectly with the band, his heartfelt playing was warmly received. He did the title track of his current album "Can't Stop Now", then it was time for the next guest, Steve Oliver on guitar who is always a joy to listen to with his unique voice and spirited guitar playing. He did a couple of songs from his catalog, before Chieli Minucci brought the house down with his rendition of Stevie Wonder's "Cause We've Ended As Lovers", which is a staple of his shows, followed by "Crazy Eights" from his current Genesis CD. Then Vincent Ingala did "Vintage Vibe" from his debut CD, followed by "If I Could Fly" from his current album, two totally enjoyable tracks carried by his smooth horn. Steve Oliver came back for two more tracks, one of them was the classic "Daybreak", one of the first singles Special EFX ever did back in 1989, offering a decidedly world beat, which marked the end of the show. They returned for one encore, an exended version of "Kicking It Hard", that gave each player plenty of room to solo, bringing a great show to an end.
